Reflection Of Eveline - 1135 Words

Eveline In the short story â€Å"Eveline† by James Joyce, talks about a young woman who is around nineteen years of age that deals with a lot in life. As Eveline sits and gazes out the window one evening, she begins to think about her past and how it has been painful to her. Growing up Eveline didn’t have the best family life. She had an abusive father who would always terrorize the family. Before Eveline’s mother died, she told Eveline to make sure she watched after her brothers and to keep them safe. Eveline had a big task at hand but she made sure she kept her mother’s promise. While living with her father, Eveline has to balance working two jobs. Whenever Eveline earned any money, she had to give it all to her father. The only time†¦show more content†¦This is an example of visualisation because the reader is thinking Eveline is going to get on the boat but in actuality she doesn’t. That part is manipulating the reader because it may seem as though Eveline was going to get on the boat however, she thought about what she would be leaving behind. Also, Eveline becomes paralyzed because she can not let go of the past. This exemplifies the visualization that contributes to the meaning of the story. Joyce says, â€Å"perhaps she would never see again those familiar objects from which she had never dreamed of being divided† (25). Eveline was not ready to let go of her past home to embark upon a journey to her new life. â€Å"Imaging Eveline Visualised Focalisation in James Joyce’s Dubliners† by Peter de Voogd, he states, â€Å"I set out to analyze how the Joycean text ‘works’ visually, how its words create images, related to that, how at times the text’s typography and lay-out defines part of its context† (25). As the reader is reading, Joyce makes the reader visualize what is happening in his or her mind. Eveline is forever paralyzed because of how she is stuck in the past. Use of Irony to Portray Morality in Lord Byrons Don Juan In Don Juan, George Gordon, Lord Byron, diverges from his name-sake characterization with an un-Byronic hero, Don Juan. The poem has been viewed as nihilistic and immoral. Actually there is plenty present in the first canto to show morality and hope for humanity. The poem should be viewed as the author intended: a satire on abuses of the present state of Society, an not an eulogy on vice... (Bostetter 9). Don Juan is a satire and therefore the morals present are shown in an ironic way. If fact, he wrote in such an obvious ironic fashion that it is hard to imagine the message was lost on many. His ironic theme is based on what people think and what they actually do. In effect†¦show more content†¦Byron pokes fun at the hypocritical nature of people. An overabundant curiosity in others affairs is certainly looked down upon yet it is rampant among people. Thus within in one sentence Byron points this idea out; people say one thing yet do another. This problem is central to what Byron sees as wrong with society, the basic hypocritical nature of people. There is truth to his thinking and by directing the reader to notice this, he can be said to be wanting to change that. Change usually does not occur until the fault is presented outright. Indeed, one form taken by the philosophic irony underlying the first canto suggests that cant and hypocrisy may endanger the very continuity of civilized tradition (Bostetter 22). The narrator, using his particular talent in prying in peoples affairs feels fit to speak of Juans upbringing. Instead of quarreling, had they been but both in,/ Their senses, theyd have sent young master forth/ To school, or had him soundly whippd at home,/ To teach him manners for the time to come (Byron 197-200). This presents a sort of paradox--the reader may find it immoral for the narrator to judge Juans parents and yet without this view Juans later episodes would have less meaning behind them; for we would not know the reasons behind his behavior. Perhaps we would find the narrators opinion of Juans parents biased. Therefore we are told more of their immoral behavior. They lived an unhappy sort of life,/ Wishing each other,

Rationality and the Ethical Life-Aristotle and Kant Free Essays

What is rationality and the ethical life? According to Aristotle and Kant, they have different views on what these two things mean. Aristotle explained that a virtuous activity has an intermediate position of excess and deficiency and also a mean relative to us. The definition of virtue is a mean, insofar, as it aims at what is intermediate. Aristotle also explained that we must become who we are on our own. Kant explained that humanity is defined as being rational. It is our duty by nature to act morally because we are rational. We have absolute worth because we are human beings. Aristotle and Kant have many similarities and differences in their understandings of the ethical life. Aristotle explained that the virtuous life is the excellent life, which is the happy life, which is the rational life. To be rational, we must practice the ten virtues. Rationality is rooted in our actions. If we see someone doing something out of the norm, we usually conclude that they are irrational. Our actions play a huge role on what we believe in society to be rational or irrational. Aristotle’s understanding of the rational person is someone who practices the ten virtues in a public life because you cannot lead an excellent life if it is a private life. I agree with Aristotle because in order to become rational, you must practice these virtues while interacting with others. Aristotle also believes that the highest good is happiness. Happiness is the human function Happiness is the ultimate end for human beings and happiness alone makes life worth living. However, we must achieve our own happiness by doing something with excellence. Aristotle explains that in order to lead an ethical life, we must leada rational life. Humans are born with the capabilityof becoming virtuous. We must become who we are. Kant explains that because we are human we are rational. All human beings are rational so it is universally shared. Categorical imperative explains tat we must act morally. Our intensions are to be moral when acing and it is our duty, by nature, to act morally. When we act, our intentions are always for goodwill. Kant understood that with rationality comes freedom. When one is rational and free, then one is moral, which explains moral law. Because we are humans, we have absolute worth. I cannot use someone as a means to my ends. Slavery is an example of using humans as a means to some sort of ends. The law of humanity explains that we have absolute worth because we are humans and you cannot put a price on human beings. Kant believes that human beings have absolute dignity and worth because we are human. While studying both the philosophers, I found more differences than similarities in their works. I believe that both philosophers make interesting arguments in what it really means to lead the ethical life. While Aristotle explained that we must become virtuous throughout our lives by interacting with others and leading an excellent life to find happiness. Kant explained that we are born with absolute dignity and worth because we are human. Aristotle and Kant both argue that because we are human, we are rational people. Five Careers for a Graduate of Agricultural StudiesIn the following paragraphs I will be discussing the five jobs selected that a new graduate in agriculture may want to follow to upstart his career. A. Self-Employed FarmerA self-employed farmer is one that you see out in the field early in the morning and late at night. He does not work for a large company growing crops for them; he grows them for him to sell. The farmers main goal is to raise the most productive crop he can, earning the best profit available, and working with the land to keep it sustainable condition. A variety of crops can be grown, and animals can be raised too. This is a job that one must truly love and be devoted to for if one is not then many things can go wrong and they will not succeed. B. Sales (Equipment, Chemical, Seed)A sales person is a person who has to have a lot of initiative to go out and introduce people to his product. I grouped sales all together because they all use the same principle and that is initiative. The sales person has many hours on the road traveling all over his district talking to people and just keeping up his public relations with the farmer, so when it comes time to sell his product he might have a edge up. This person is also very knowledgeable of everything he sells, since the buyer always has a question and they come to him when they want it answered. Also public speaking is a big part in this field, since meetings are required to introduce new products each year. C. Ground Truthing Mananger Ground truthing managers are involved with the managing of crop scouts, who survey crops. These managers are also involved with the growers in their project and keep up public relations with them. Managers will be called on to answer seed and chem ical 1questions and make recommendations to the growers, from the data collected by thescouts in the growers respective fields. One needs to be knowledgeable in many aspects of agronomy, examples such as, soils, weeds, seed, crops, crop development and chemical knowledge are a must. Computer skills are used since there is handheld computers in the field, then the transfer of the information taken down at the field must be put onto another computer and sent to the headquarters for evaluation. D. TeacherTeachers provide insight to young aspiring agriculture students. Teachers take what they have learned in school and also from practical experience, and pass it on to the students in a form that can be taught or studied. Teachers are employed at schools as Vocational-Agriculture teachers. They may be required to head up the FFA chapter in that school and make all arrangements that go along with that. A graduate wishing to teach, but not on the high-school level, may try teaching at a university.
